Year of action against Internet Shutdowns

Last year in April many of you signed onto the KeepUsOnline.in campaign against internet shutdowns. More than 15,000 people signed a petition that we took to the government and asked them to stop cutting our internet access. While we have had many modest victories -- in courts, parliament and the wider public arena, this problem has only grown in scale. India remains the No. 1 country globally that disrupts online access even for trivial issues such as preventing cheating in exams.

This is a national shame. It undermines our fundamental rights to life, liberty and expression. It has caused economic damage of thousands of crores and disrupted essential services such as debit and credit card transactions.

As 2018 draws to a close we pause for reflection. In our work, we have realized that changing legal rules and fighting for human freedom and liberty through and within technologies has become a priority for all of us. We all hope for radical change, but often results are built in smaller chunks of incremental victories. We are optimistic that next year, we will be able to do more.

I personally would like to thank you for speaking up for the free and open internet and invite you to our website to see how we are continuously working with strategy, rigor and belief to achieve the goals of fundamental rights within and beyond technology. If you like our work and want to support us, please write back to me and also consider a donation. Our work relies on the generosity of ordinary internet users like you.

If you would like to volunteer your skills and time please do write to me at apar@internetfreedom.in

Thank you for your time,

A Letter

It was a rainy morning of monsoon. Sraddha(A Hindu Ritual) was being performed, the entire sky has been occupied with crows. Although, the population of birds has dwindled because of the pollution, as per the ancient Hindu ritual crows came to eat the Sraddha.

Somewhere in distant, the horns of vehicles were blowing, children were preparing for schools. In between them, there was stillness in Niravbhai’s home. Niravbhai was sitting on the chair in the courtyard, tears were peeping out of his eyes, but did not come out because of the fear of society.

Sharada, a wife of Niravbhai, came in front of him and said, “What are you thinking? Where have you been lost? Do you remember..” Even before she completed her sentence, he interrupted “Yes, I remember those consequences happened two years earlier… I remember that heinous act.” He started sobbing, could not utter a word after. He began crying, his eyes were expressing his words.

“Why are you crying? We could not do anything in what has happened.” And he started crying, holding Sharada’s hand.

“Please do not cry… Please do not burden yourself, it is not good for your health.” Sharada knew that he was suffering from a disease of the heart.

“Yes, you are right. Patient of heart, but the same illness took the life of my daughter.” As he completed his sentence, he stood up from the chair and started walking towards his room. He pulled Sharada’s hand along.

As he walked, he said, “Sharada, Do you know who is the murderer of our daughter… It is me, I killed her. Even though hands were not mine,  I made those circumstances.” He stopped as he completes.

They came inside his room, Sharada said, “What are you talking about? You inquired about everything, and then after the marriage took place. Were there mistakes? Why are you acting like it was your fault?” And she started crying.

Nirav unlocked the cupboard and started searching something between old books and papers.

Suddenly, he found a letter, and he started weeping again, like cloud bursted during monsoon days.

“What is it? And why are you crying again? Say something…” Sharada said hastily. Nirav handover the letter to Sharada.

As Sharada opened the letter and as she read the first word, she started crying embracing the letter. She could remember something, and she rooted to the spot. She sat on the bed, and started reading.

“Dear Pappa,’

I need to write this letter to you because I am unable to tell this in front of you. Pappa, I am still in the third year of my engineering…  You have decided my engagements eight months ago, and I do not mind… but…

Marriage…? Do not you think this is too early?  Pappa, What I did in past, is unforgivable, I am not even worthy for that. I brought disgrace to you and your reputation in the society, and for that, I am ready to accept any of punishment of yours. You may not know, but I did this engagement for that only.

But after this engagement, I started afraid of something. I know that Veer is 9 years older than me and I do not even have an issue with that but I am constantly feeling that he did this engagement for sexuality only.

I tried to stop him many times, but still, he tries to fondle me. This may be okay and acceptable after the marriage, but even before the marriage???

I have thought about suicide so many times, but then I started thinking about my mother who borne me for 9 months in her womb, my father who raised me to this. And I leave these thoughts asides.

I will do this marriage if you say, but if it is possible, please give me a single chance. Please… So that I can prove myself. Pappa, I will not do anything that brings shame. Pappa, Even though I will get married, but truly saying, I will never ever be happy ever after.

Pappa, I know you are suffering from a disease of the heart and if you will worry about anything, you have to face the difficult circumstances. This is why I am writing this letter to you. If you think I deserve the second chance, please break this engagement, but if not, please put this letter away, I will never ask anything about this.

Yours lovingly.

Sharada felt the presence of her daughter in her eyes. Nirav was staring at the wall absent-mindedly, as he heard Sharada’s woe, he said, “Our daughter got married happily for me. If I had given her a chance, she would have been here now, alive.”

There was silence all around after a long-heavy rain. Nirav said, sobbing, “She said that Veer wanted her body only… but even as being a father, I could not understand her. I sold off my daughter to that rapist. Though he and his friends are the rapists and murderers, it was me who took my daughter there.

Both Nirav and Sharada, started weeping. They cried their heart out. The sound of sobs filled the room. The dogs barked in distance. But the ship has sailed.

Every year, in India, many parents married off their daughters considering the well beings of the in-laws and the boys. In many places, these daughters have to bear those monstrous acts and other atrocities. I have given few links of such cases below, you can read them.

It is better to trust your children and give them another chance, otherwise, you will be responsible for whatever happens with them, and then there will be nothing, except regret.

Think about it.

Will you be my co-author?

I fell in love with her,
She has a charm,
The charm which can make everyone happy,
She teaches me to believe in myself,
But time to time she lost herself.
I tried to post her a latter,
The latter of my love,
But betrayed me.
Many times I tried to type my proposal in a text,
But then my heart erased it again and again.
Time goes,
She and I live in multiple affairs.
I don't know everything about her,
But I tried to engage myself with her.
Even today I tried to say,
But again my fear stops me to type 'I Love You'
Now I think that day will never come,
when I can say,
Will you be my co-author?

Why Should I Need You?

I have a moon,
Who is always with me to hear my pain.

I have my words,
Through which I can express my pain.

I have my pen,
Which can convey my pain to the society.

I have a soul,
Who gives me the solution to my pain

Then, why should I need you?

Request for donation to Internet Freedom Foundation

Dear reader, a very happy Diwali!

The winter months for many are a time for celebration, festivities and reflection. It's time spent with family and friends shopping, gorging on homemade delicacies and sweets. Given how firmly tethered the internet is to our lives much of our community celebration occurs online. We wish each other, gift and exchange information and opinions for a variety of purposes. Yes, even, the timely reports on the awful smog which right now is enveloping large parts of northern India.

What makes this possible is the free and open internet. A digital medium which is accessible and safe, when we need it -- not shut down on a whim, or censored by old, antiquated colonial laws. An internet where we get a real choice to browse around, explore and talk --  not a walled garden or a highway with tolls. But also, a medium which is far from perfect and needs rules to protect us from mass surveillance. In other words, a mystical genie that grants us three wishes. Freedom of speech, net neutrality and privacy.

Over the past two months, IFF has worked hard to support work in all three domains. Some of it is publicly catalogued in our updates. But we are also building out a robust backend that provides impact and positive movement, systemically and strategically. This includes hiring staff and keeping interns. In this process what has indeed been rewarding have been the offers of help by many volunteers. While we are working with some, to honestly realise and engage we plan to deploy human and technical resources in the coming months.

In my last email to you, I indicated that IFF's mission is ambitious and our success relies on your good wishes and kindness. This includes your faith in extending us financial support. We are thankful this continues as our work gathers pace. We need much more of it, and in the spirit of Diwali look forward to greater generosity.

Please do consider a donation to IFF and help us light up digital rights in India.

Thank you,

Have You Read The Story Of Nadia Murad?

Dearest Darling Friends,

Here is the story of Nadia. Get ready for a range of emotions as you read this story.

The slave market opened at night. We heard commotion downstairs where the militants were. When the first man entered our dinghy room we started screaming. Our screams sounded like explosions. We moaned, wailed, invoked the name of Allah, but nothing stopped the militants. Forget about stopping, they did not even slow down.
They paced around, their eyes piercing our clothes, while we screamed and attempted to hide behind each other. Then they gravitated towards the most beautiful girls examining their hair and mouths.
‘They’re virgins, right?’ they asked a guard who nodded like a shop-keeper priding in his products.
They touched us anywhere they wanted, running their hands on our breasts and legs, as if we were animals.
“As I lay there crying, a huge monstrous man came in front of me. His name was Salwan. He started kicking me. He then lifted me and……”

19-year-old Nadia Murad was repeatedly raped, tortured, sold and resold for 3 months by ISIS militants.
It took the teenager humongous spunk to escape from her last captor’s house in Mosul on a hot summer night in 2014.
She was given shelter by a kind carpenter’s family who eventually smuggled her out of Iraq with a disguised identity and sent her to Germany in early 2015.
It saw the start of a new life and a crusade against human trafficking.
From Mosul in Iraq to the Peace Nobel in Sweden, her journey has been the most awe-inspiring saga of willpower and courage I’ve ever heard.
May God bless the carpenters who laid their lives on the line to save an abused child. While Nadia is the spoken and recognized heroine of the story, they are the unspoken and unrecognized heroes of the story.
If destiny gives you an opportunity to be a part of this story in retrospect, which role do you see yourself playing? Nadia? The Carpenters? The others girls who suffered but did not have the spunk to fight it out? Those who knew about all this yet did nothing? Difficult to answer isn’t it?
This story has given me sleepless nights. Waiting to see where it leads me to.

With love, prayers and best wishes,
Naren

Imagine, when we wake up, we are given only what we had thanked for.

I Love Her

She suffered from the biggest pain of the world to give me a birth but,
Even after suffering so much pain she was happy for my birth instead of her pain.
Sometimes she went to bed hungry but,
She always feeds me more than my need.
If I get a fever then she never leaves me alone but,
I don’t remember the last time that when her health was spoiled.
She is my MOM & I LOVE HER.
She did most fight with me but,
She loves me more than her life.
She complains about my mischief to my dad but,
She locked my all secrets in the treasury of her heart.
Our choices are similar so that she wants her share in all things but,
Often without asking she give me things I needed.
She is my SISTER & I LOVE HER.

After completing many years of my life, she came but,
She is only who understand my dreams.
In happiness, she stands with me but,
In grief, she always stands before me.
Sometimes she gets annoyed, sometimes the displeasure creates a fight between us but,
After all those fights she hugs me tight and kisses my lips.
She is my WIFE & I LOVE HER
At age, she is too small to me but,
Sometimes she gives me life-changing advice.
Sometimes I got anger due to her mistakes but,
Then I am the only one who tries to bring her smile back on her face.
I want to make her independent to fly in this world like a bird but,
At the same time, I am afraid of her safety.
She is my DAUGHTER & I LOVE HER.
They are my Life and I LOVE THEM…..

I can proudly say that I am Indian and I love my country but...

Hey, I am Abhijeet Mehta, a responsible citizen of India.
India which is the most ancient country.
India which has the oldest cultural background.
The India where many civilizations came and grew their civilizations.
India which has the largest number of youth.
India which gives the youngest and greatest leaders in the world.
India which is the world's only country believing in all religions as equal and that's why we have more than seven religions and twenty-two different languages.
India which has ancient universities.
India which has the largest number of youth and they are in top positions in their work.
India which has the fastest economic growth in the world.
India which gives the base to science and medical sector.
That's why I can proudly say that I am Indian and I love my country.

But regret takes the position of proud when I see the facts and figures regarding poverty, corruption, civil war, social inequality, women and child harassment and so on.
These all are very small issues but its impact is very high.

The root of all problems is within us. We partially accept all phenomena from different cultures and merge it with ours.
Our celebrities are busy making their fan clubs,
Our politicians are busy expanding their political careers,
Our business houses are busy in growing their businesses,
Our less paid government officers are busy in earning more money resorting to corruption,
Our youth is busy in acquiring top position,
And to get these things done we are spoiling our society.
No one is interested in change, everyone is interested in growth.
The 21st century is the time of collaborations but here we are repeating the same mistakes which are done by our earlier kings. They also wanted to expand their region and that's why The East India Company succeeded to rule on us for 200 years.
But I think now it's time to speak up, now it's a time to come out of rival politics, now it's time to raise our actions against Maoist and Naxalites, now it's a time to raise the action against social inequality, now it's time to go back to our roots, our roots which are in our scriptures,
now it's a time to make India better.
No one can guide someone but everyone can help each other.
Forget about your positions, your self-esteem, your dignity and start working on ground level.
because
"The change comes from the work, which is done at ground level."
I am starting today; join me if you want because together we can do more.

Live long and Happy Life with The Japanese Concept ‘Ikigai’

I was surprised when I see that some people like my father or uncle are tired from their life and work at the age of sixty and at the same time and in the same world a person like our Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Honorable President Ramnath Kovind whose age is 67 years and 74 years respectively can work tremendously. Why such a huge gap between the same people? Both are human then also one is frustrated with his life and other can see new dreams.

But, I got my answer when I came to know about the Japanese concept to live a long and happy life.
We all know that we are habituated to compromise with our lives and adjust it to situations. We never fight to get that which we want from life and that's the border which divides persons like Narendra Modi, Ramnath Kovind, Narayan Murty, Manmohan Sing, Bill Gates, Kapil Dev, Amitabh Bachchan and persons like mine and maybe most of your fathers.
Let we see how this concept of 'Ikigai' divides us from them.
  1. What is IKIGAI?
Like the Danish word hygge, there’s no simple, direct translation into English for the Japanese word ikigai. It roughly means the “thing that you live for” or “the reason for which you get up in the morning.” In a nutshell, it encompasses the idea that happiness in life is about more than money or a fancy job title. (Courtesy: Melody Wilding)
In a simple way, you can understand from this Image.
https3a2f2fblogs-images-forbes-com2fchrismyers2ffiles2f20182f022fikigai-1

It’s easiest to think about ikiagi as an intersection, the common ground between:
  • What you love
  • What you care about
  • What the world needs
  • What you can get paid for

So Now, the question is how to find your IKIGAI?

1. Start with questions.

Grab a journal and ask yourself the following questions:
  • What do you love? (These speak to your passion.)
  • What are you good at? (These speak to your profession.)
  • What does the world need? (These speak to your mission.)
  • What can you get paid for? (These speak to your vocation.)
You don’t have to force yourself to come up with answers in one sitting. In fact, it’s more productive to take your time.
Over the course of a few days or weeks, take notes as ideas and insights come to you. Most importantly, be radically honest with yourself. Don’t be afraid to jot down whatever comes to mind, no matter how crazy or irrational it might seem right now.
If those questions aren’t sparking as much insight as you would like, try these:
  • What would you like to see the change in the world?
  • What, in your life as it is now, makes you happy?
  • Why do you get out of bed in the morning?
  • Have you had any life-changing moments that provided a lightning bolt of clarity?
Be sure to include other life or career experiences that significantly inform your values. After you’ve answered these questions thoughtfully, start to look for patterns. What kinds of themes are apparent? Are there obvious intersections among categories, or do they seem desperate? If clear links aren’t evident, don’t worry — that’s normal. This process will take time.

2. Map it out.

Mapping out your answers to the questions above is helpful, especially if you feel stuck. There are all sorts of ways to create a map; experiment with whatever makes visual sense to you.

3. See if it feels right.

Whether you’re holding a list or a map or something else from the steps above, reflect and do a gut check.
Gordon Matthews, an anthropologist, and ikigai researcher say he uses an intuitive approach to examine his own life. On an occasional basis, he checks in with himself about his ikigai: “How’s it going? What’s bothering me? What’s really going on now?”
These are worthwhile questions to ask, whether you determined your ikigai forty years ago or you’re just learning about the concept now. If you’re on an initial ikigai fact-finding journey, integrating instinctive nudges with logic-driven thinking can lead to a deeper, more coherent sense of purpose.

4. Test it

The payoff to finding your ikigai is in living it out. Like any aspiration, it doesn’t happen through introspection alone. You have to commit to consistent action in order to make strides—and also to make adjustments along the way to continue to grow.
Once you’ve arrived at a working idea about your ikigai, it’s time to take some action in the real world to test if following this life purpose is actually something you will find meaningful and fulfilling.
This may involve shifting priorities or explore new directions. For example, maybe you opt to travel less and prioritize family time. Perhaps you start a new business that combines multiple interests. You might find yourself changing careers entirely if your current focus does not overlap with your ikigai.

5. Build your support system

As with most of life’s transitions, it’s critical to have support while consciously developing your sense of ikigai.

This is the way to find your ikigai which is suggested by Melody Wilding, Human Behavior professor. Coach. Get the newsletter thousands use to master their mindset & emotions.

One of the best way to contact people on Mobile phones

Mobile phones become a basic requirement of any human being specially in country like India. More than 50% of people has more than 1 connection (thanks to Jio ;) ). Two generations of Ambanis' have literally revolutionized the telecommunication industry. Dhirubhai came with an idea of 'everyone must have mobile phone' and Mukeshbhai came with an idea of 'everyone must have Internet connection on their mobile phone'.  Everyone has mobile and data connection so they start believing that "I can connect to anyone at anytime". Isn't it? That's the time when people like me sounds annoying to them.

I believe that every time it's not necessary to receive all the calls on your mobile. Mostly, people involved in academia faces this type of problem because they can't receive calls during their lectures. In a free calling era, many people call you for passing their free time, which you don't have so avoiding such people during working hours is a good practice. I also have habit (good or bad) of not responding to calls when I am working on something or having some discussion because it creates distraction in your current work. In US and other developed countries, voice mail service is available with all telecom operators so you can record your message if other person don't want to talk at that time. By this way you can convey your message to other person without disturbing him. In India, we also have such system but very few people are aware of it so it's useless to subscribe for such services (I already tried it).
We still have SMS, which is now free (again thanks to Jio). Hence, if someone is not replying to your call, you should send a reason of calling via SMS. It may possible that after reading the message that person may call you back. Don't forget to write your name at the end of SMS. I don't know this trick works with how many people but I assure that it will work with me! ;)

P.S. This article is inspired from the article titled, 'How do you manage communication channels?', written by one of my blogger friend, Pratik Akkawar.

Peace

Cigarette smoking is injurious to health!
Everyone knows this;
But no one is interested to stop the manufacturing;
Because by stopping it, many business houses lost their business!
Same way, war and weapon are destroying the world;
But no one is interested to stop weapon manufacturing.
Because by doing it, many superpower countries will lose their power!
Actually we the people of the world want peace;
But, with bullets and guns?
No!

If this is your peace;
Then we don’t need it.
Please free this world from weapon manufacturing;
No more weapon;
No more war.
We are not the president of any country;
We are not hungry for power;
We are just human beings;
We want unity and peace;
We are the family, please stop dividing us to rule on us.

Why should we think about content marketing and SEO strategy?

Today is the era of Marketing. Whenever you think to start a new company or firm you have to think about its marketing. As you know before some year two mobile companies named Oppo and Vivo came to the market and capture most of India’s and Asia’s market. Procter & Gamble,  American multinational consumer goods corporation and General Motors, again America’s largest Automobile firm spends the maximum amount of its expenditure on the advertisement. In the era of the Internet, Digital Marketing popularly known as Content Marketing is performing a huge role in Marketing.
Let us learn, what is Content Marketing?
"A type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services."
Basically, Content marketing is the gap between what brands produce and what consumers actually want.
Ohhh! I know the definition is always boring so let me explain you it by telling a short story: Wadhawan is a small town in India.
Before three years a group of youngsters decided to start an NGO which will run a Food Processing Company and threw that they will help widow, unmarried and handicap women.
They started "Wadhawan Women Organisation". Initially, they have their customers in Wadhawan only and they want to expand more.

In that group, there is one IT person and he advised others to make their website.
They made a website but they didn’t get enough views. Hense, they call one SEO strategy expert and asked him to advise.
The SEO strategy expert told them, "if you need more visitors and visibility of your site then you have to develop more content."
The group of people again asked him, "What kind of content?"
The SEO expert replied, "You have to make some videos and write some articles and have to upload it on this website, this will help you in creating your content. You also need to write or shoot your content in the way where you can advertise yourself. It will create your social presence and content marketing will act as your SEO strategy."
Thereafter, they started learning about content writing and development from various content marketing institutes which provides online courses and content marketing seminar videos.
They learned SEO strategy, SEO knowledge, the relation between SEO and Content writing and so on.
With all the efforts, they get Amazon Affiliation on their website and their market expanded to global from local.
I hope you can understand the importance of Content Marketing and SEO.
What is SEO?
"SEO is a marketing discipline focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results. SEO encompasses both the technical and creative elements required to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines."
SEO is like a wrapper of your content, which will help to advertise your content in an organic manner means without any paid promotion.
Now, you think that What is the importance of SEO and Content Marketing for me if I don’t want to be a blogger or e-commerce businessman?
Because today almost every company has separate content writing & development as well as SEO analysis department. They need a good SEO strategist, SEO marketer, SEO Analyst, SEO Content Writer, Content Developer, Content Analyst and Content Editor. You will have a number of job opportunity if you learn SEO marketing strategy and Content Marketing.
What is the difference between simple SEO strategist and a Certified SEO strategist?
An ordinary SEO strategist can help you in analyzing SEO but Certified SEO strategist knew the Targeted People for Content Marketing, he can build right strategy and it will help a company to get search engines and result in more views.

As per Julie Fleischer, VP Marketing, Neustar, "Content Marketing provides 4x the ROI of our traditional marketing spend."
Pros.:
  • You become a source for information and an expert in your field. When someone needs your product or service they are more likely to choose the company they got the most information from.
  • Your content will attract qualified clients and customers, not people who are simply browsing. It helps in promoting your business and creates brand awareness.  People will see your brand and get to know you as a familiar face.
  • Content marketing can increase the conversion rate for your business by giving them the information needed to act. Content can be reused in many different mediums, (articles, blog posts, videos, white pages, infographics, etc.) extending the life of the content.
Cons.:
  • Content marketing requires effort to produce content that people want to read, watch or use.
  • Content marketing requires time and commitment.  It is a long-term strategy in order to build trust and a following. It isn’t free.  You will need writers, graphics designers, web programmers, and other professionals to keep your content available to your prospects and customers.
  • Creating engaging content can be difficult on a regular basis. You and your team will have to become experts on finding creative ways to say the same thing and/or expand beyond your product or service to stay valuable, relevant and consistent.
Some Dos and Don’ts for SEO Wondering what to do, or what not to do to optimize your site, appear on Google and Bing or be able to tell who’s visiting your site?
Source: https://themarketingshop.ie/dos-donts-seo/
Where you can learn SEO and Content Marketing?
  • MOOCs:

Conclusion:
  • Marketing is an essential part of any organization but in the era of Internet SEO and Content Marketing became more important than conventional marketing.
  • To develop your site and analyze SEO in the proper way you required a good SEO strategist who has an experience in the field of content writing, content developing, SEO strategies, SEO based content marketing, and SEO analyzing.
  • Apart from this, you can make a prestigious career in the field of SEO and Content Marketing & SEO strategist.

Does restriction required on the length of advertisements at TV, radio, and Cinemas?

While watching our favorite show on TV or listening to our favorite program on radio, we find annoying and lengthy advertisements. The more popular a show becomes, the more advertisements it fetches. I agree that the producer needs to earn a lot of money through advertisements only but still, there should be some restriction on the length of advertisements. Isn't it?

Advertisements are the largest source of income for TV and radio and they can show it in between the show but what about cinemas? Why are they showing approximately 30 minutes of advertisement during the interval? I mean we are paying to cinemas in terms of movie tickets then why they need to show so many advertisements? Initially, they were showing advertisements before starting the movie so people like me use to go late to cinemas but now they are showing it at the time of interval. So we have no way out!

I personally believe that there should be some restriction on the total length of advertisements and hope my message reaches to concern authority.

Is "self sacrifice" worthy?

This is a story of a woman who sacrificed lots of things for her family.

A long long time ago, my husband, our two sons and I had gone out for an ice-cream treat. It was sometime when I was always thinking of curbing unnecessary expenditure. As a selfless person, who was too much in love with her family to deny them of any pleasure, I always chose to sacrifice my own excesses. And it didn’t even feel like a sacrifice ever, because I was a woman of very few needs/ wants/ desires...
So, when my husband asked each one of us to choose our favorite flavor of ice-cream, I responded as usual, “I won’t have any.”
The boys enjoyed one round and ordered another; my response remained the same, “I don’t want any.”
I was happy with my family’s happiness. I was happy that my not indulging in pleasure was perhaps ensuring some more goodies in the future for my dear ones.

But my husband looked at me and said, “Please don’t do this to yourself and to us. I want a happy wife; not a sacrificial lamb. I have seen that too much sacrifice eventually leads to bitterness and victim mentality. And I sure as hell do not want you to develop that. You see, after a period of time, the boys and I will stop asking you for your choice, because we will assume that you don’t want it; we will take you for granted and subconsciously start treating you as a doormat. It will then hurt you and you will feel miserable and unimportant. You will think that we don’t care about you. While in truth we would be behaving naturally, knowing from experience that you don’t care for yourself. That your wishes are not important. So, I suggest that you always take your share and then if you really don’t like it, share it with someone who does. That will be good for all of us. You will learn how to claim your importance in your own and our eyes and we will always ask you. There will be happy all around.”
His talk made sense to me and I couldn’t help but think about many older women who always complained, “I did so much for so and so but today they don’t even think/ care for me.” I also remembered many instances where children would turn back and say, “But why did you do so much? Did we ask for it? You did it because it made you happy. Who asked you to be so self-sacrificing?” This train of thought made me take a re-look at the word 'selfless', equating it with self-sacrifice. That day the meaning of these words opened up for me!
Self-sacrifice is not the balanced way!!!

Hadoop 1.2.1 Installation and Configuration on Single Node

I have experienced difficulties in installing and configuring Hadoop so I want to make one easy guide for installation and configuration of Hadoop 1x. I am assuming that readers have a knowledge of basic Linux commands, hence, I am not going to explain those commands in detail.
I have used Hadoop-1.2.1, jdk-7, and Ubuntu(Linux) in our setup.
Install SSH:
  • We require SSH for remote login to different machines for Map Reduce task to run on Hadoop cluster
Commands:
  • sudo apt-get update
    • updates list of packages
    •
    • sudo apt-get install openssh-server
      • Installs OpenSSH Server

      Generate Keys:
      • Hadoop logged in to remote machines many times while running a MapReduce task. Therefore, we need to make a passwordless entry for Hadoop to all the nodes in our cluster.
      Commands:
      • ssh CSE-DBMS-04
        • instead of CSE-DBMS-04, you should write your system's hostname or localhost. It asks for a password

        • ssh-keygen
          • generates SSH Keys
        • ENTER FILE NAME:
          • no need to write anything simply press enter as we want to use default settings
        • ENTER PASSPHRASE:
          • no need to write anything simply press enter as we want to use default settings
        • cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
          • Copy id_rsa.pub key to authorized keys to make a passwordless entry for the user
        • ssh CSE-DBMS-04
          • Now it should not ask for a password

          Install Java
          • I prefer offline Java installation. So I have already downloaded Java tarball and place it in my Downloads directory
          Commands:
          • sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/jvm/
            • create a directory for Java

            • sudo tar -xvf ~/Downloads/jdk-7u67-linux-x64.tar.gz -C /usr/lib/jvm
              • extract and copy the content of Java tarball to Java directory

              • cd /usr/lib/jvm
                • go to Java directory

                • sudo ln -s jdk1.7.0_67 java-1.7.0-sun-amd64
                  • generate a symbolic link to jdk directory which will be used in Hadoop configuration

                  • sudo update-alternatives --config java
                    • checking and setting Java alternatives

                    • sudo nano $HOME/.bashrc
                      • setting the Java path. Add following two lines at the end of this file
                        • export JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_67"
                        • export PATH="$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin"

                      • exec bash
                        • restarts bash(terminal)

                        • java
                          • it should not show "command not found!" error

                          Install Hadoop:
                          • First, we need to download the required tarball of Hadoop.
                          Commands:
                          • sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/hadoop/
                            • create Hadoop directory

                            • cd ~/Downloads
                            • sudo tar -xvf ~/Downloads/hadoop-1.2.1-bin.tar.gz
                            • sudo cp -r hadoop-1.2.1/* /usr/local/hadoop/
                              • extract and copy Hadoop files from tarball to the Hadoop directory

                              •  sudo nano $HOME/.bashrc
                                • setting the Hadoop path. Add following lines at the end of this file
                                  • export HADOOP_PREFIX=/usr/local/hadoop
                                  • export PATH=$PATH:$HADOOP_PREFIX/bin

                                • exec bash
                                  • restarts bash(terminal)

                                  • hadoop
                                    • it should not show "command not found!" error

                                    Configuration of Hadoop
                                    • We are setting some environment variables and changing some configuration file according to our cluster setup.
                                    Commands:
                                    • cd /usr/local/hadoop/conf
                                      • go to configuration directory of Hadoop

                                      • sudo nano hadoop-env.sh
                                        • open environment variable file and add following two lines at its respective place in file. They are already available in a file with some different values so keep it as it is and add this lines after it respectively
                                          • export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-sun-amd64
                                          • export HADOOP_OPTS=-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true

                                        • sudo nano core-site.xml
                                          • open HDFS configuration file and set name server address and tmp dir value as shown in below figure. you have to use your hostname instead of "CSE-DBMS-04"
                                          • fs.default.name   hdfs://CSE-DBMS-04:10001
                                          • hadoop.tmp.dir   /usr/local/hadoop/tmp

                                          • sudo nano mapred-site.xml
                                            • Open Map Reduce configuration file and set job tracker value. you have to write your hostname instead of "CSE-DBMS-04"
                                            • mapred.job.tracker   CSE-DBMS-04:10002

                                            • sudo mkdir /usr/local/hadoop/tmp
                                              • create tmp directory to store all files on the data node

                                              • sudo chown hadoop /usr/local/hadoop/tmp
                                                • change owner of the directory to avoid access control issues. write your username instead of "hadoop"

                                                • sudo chown hadoop /usr/local/hadoop
                                                  • change owner of the directory to avoid access control issues. write your username instead of "hadoop"

Format DFS (skip this step if you are going for Multi-Node setup):
                                                  • Now we are ready to format our Distributed File System (DFS)
                                                  Command:
                                                  • hadoop namenode -format
                                                    • Check for the message "namenode successfully formatted"

                                                    Start all process:
                                                    • We are ready to start our hadoop cluster (though only single node)
                                                    Commands:
                                                    • start-all.sh
                                                      • to start all (name-node, secondary name node, data node, job tracker, task tracker)

                                                      • jps
                                                        • to check whether all services (i.e. name node, secondary name node, data node, job tracker, task tracker) started or not

To check cluster details on web interface:
                                                        • Open any browser and got following address:
                                                            • for DFS (name-node) details. Write your hostname instead of "CSE-DBMS-04"

                                                              • for Map Reduce (job tracker) details. Write your hostname instead of "CSE-DBMS-04"

                                                            Stop all processes:
                                                            • If you want to stop (shut down) all your Hadoop cluster services
                                                            Command:
                                                            • stop-all.sh
